Wharf to winding hole: 0.28 miles, 19 mins, 0.87 lm/hr
Winding hole to above Wootton Rivers Bottom Lock: 3.23 miles, 1 hr 41 mins, 1 lock, 2.51 lm/hr
So we have set ourselves free! After a seemingly long day at work I finished about half 3 and came home. Yippee I am on leave!
Our logs had been delivered today, just in time. A big load gets split between 3 boats, working out much cheaper and when I arrived John was dividing the load and allocating it to the other 2 boats. Our wood was already on the roof.
We were ready to go, watered up, empty cassettes, all we had to do was turn around as we were moored facing towards Devizes and we wanted to go towards Reading. We were also on the inside so had to move nb Summer, which John did whilst I took Epiphany the few yards to the wharf to wait for him.
It was pouring with rain! Definitely wet weather gear needed when I could eventually change! So John took her down to the winding hole at the end of the Pewsey Boat Club moorings, avoiding the canoes from Dauntsey's - a local school, winded and off we set in the right direction!
John is experimenting with a GPS system for putting our route on Water Explorer maps. So it was all set up in the back cabin. We will see this evening if it has been successful! - Not today, well I did say "experimenting"!
Despite the rain we had an enjoyable couple of hours and got as far as Wootton Rivers Bottom Lock (51). This lock was built by John Hore who worked with John Rennie on the Kennet and Avon Canal, particularly canalising the River Kennet.
We knew there were good moorings above. The top gates are extremely heavy so it was John to do the lock. It feels a long time since we have done this but what do they say about remembering how to ride a bike! After a moments thought we both did an exemplary job!
So here we are, snug as a bug in a rug?! On rings and in the peace and quiet of the countryside. Now it is waiting time for a lamb curry John is cooking - yum, I am sure the wait will be worth it!
